war and fear
I am a Gulf War veteran and I remember how I was afraid to go into war even though we had superior equipment and training. At best, war is a rough experience. When I look at kids wearing "No Fear" on tshirts and bumper stickers I can only think of General Pattons statement that: (Paraphrased here) "If there is such thing as a fearless man, I have never seen such a man. It is the couragous man, who forces himself to carry on in spite of his fear".
As a reserve Drill Sergeant (Ft. Sill OK) I tell privates that if they think were tough, just wait for combat. Basic Training is simulation and prep., combat is real, although we try to make it as real as possible.
