The range recognition switch lives inside the shifter assembly. There's a simple way to test it. Engine running, headlights on. You'll notice the shift gate is illuminated. Whichever gear is selected will be slightly brighter than the others. Put it in reverse and see if the brightness changes. If not the switch is toast.
