A few repairs on the 240D, Shake, Rattle and Roll

I have been having a rumble sound that seems to come the back of the 240. Raised the back end checking axles, sway bar, links etc... all good.

Checked center support bearing, trans fluid level, rubber mounts, exhaust hangers etc... still there.

Also had a vibration which seemed like the left front, and also a wobble in the front at slow speed. could actually see the Hood Star move looking at a fixed point.

Was thinking maybe a tire balance or maybe a tread that is coming apart.
Stopped at the tire shop to have the tires checked out. they balanced them and did a rotation. I wrote on the side wall with a ball point, R/F, L/F etc...
Get out of the shop, and it was smoother, but the vibration now seems to be the L/R corner. But at least the wobble seems to be gone.

Then Monday I decide to finally get around to installing the new valves in the Lift Pump, had a spare off a 617 engine I went through. I was having a surging problem when starting from a stop. I finally swap 616 for the 617 pump, replace the old brown 34 yr old fuel line from the pump to the Filter with a new clear line. Finally finish up at 2am.

Take her for a run, and at least the surging is gone, and seems to pull better. use to have to be in 3rd below 40mph, now at 35 in 4th she will pick it back up and past 40 to 45 on the same up hill grade.
But now have a leak from using the old Aluminum washers. Thinking maybe I could sand them down to smooth them out, use some 400 grit paper. Still leaks, but more.

Take a spare Filter Head and Lift Pump head for town for some washers. For get Ace Hardware they don`t have anything, hit a Diesel repair place, but the guy only had SAE and no metric, but gave me 4 coppers that were close. They specialize in Fords, Dodge and Chevy Diesels.
Go across the street to another shop, guy saw the Filter Head and said MB? sends me down the street to a guy that does German Imports.
Audi, VW, BMW, MB etc... guy is from Australia and knew MB`s. had the metric washers and gives me 4 metrics.

Good, now I know a guy out in the Boonies of Nevada that knows MB`s.

Install them and the leak is finally gone.

Jack up 240, drain the Diff oil, good, no metal flakes in it, so this rule`s out the thinking maybe the Diff going out. Fill it back up with new oil.

I look at the tires as to how the shop rotated them, good I marked them with a Ball point. They didn`t put them where they said. so put the rears on the front and criss crossed the fronts to the rear. Checked the air pressures, mounted them and torqued them to 80 ftlbs.

When I removed the wheels, I used my air impact gun and a deep 17mm Socket.
When I remounted them, got the Bolts started by hand, and was going to use the small 3/8 butter Fly air gun just to snug them up. Then the torque wrench to finish.
Couldn`t find the deep socket, and I was just using it. looked under the car, around on the floor, in my tool bags, on the roll around, no where to be found. WTF?
Dig around and find a short 17, and snug up the Bolts. remove the butter Fly, and there laying on the floor is the deep socket....on the large Impact gun.

Guys...am I loosing it?

Checked the front Brake pads. R/F about 1/2 way down, put them back in. L/F, one was about 1/4 and the out side one even less. had a new box of pads, and stuck them in on both sides..

Took her for a good run to Carson City, a good 22 miles to Costco, and she is smooth. L/R vibrating is gone, wobble is gone as is the surging, also don`t hear the rumble in the rear.

Have no idea what actually fixed all the problems, but she is running good now. we are almost at 376K.
Taking a trip to Portland, Or in the morning running up Hwy 395 to Reno, through Susanville, Ca. and eventually hitting Eugene, OR and I-5 north.
It is 600 and something miles.

So if anyone see`s an Ivory 240D with Nevada plates, probably us.

Hope I don`t get too confused on the way up....but at least I have my Wife to tell me where to go. LOL
