If you are motivated you can get a OM61X engine out in an afternoon. If you are removing the transmission as well you will need a load leveler on your engine hoist. This is an OM616 I'm removing here and there is barely enough room to get it out with the transmission on. I also recommend getting a heavy duty engine stand like the one posted below. These engines are heavy and you don't want one falling on you.
