I don't know of any alternator that uses a tapered shaft, some Chryslers from the 60'6 to 80's used a pressed on pulley.

The original alt on your car may have been rebuilt at some point and the key not reinstalled.

For the SAAB alt, just file something out of a piece of steel, the key isn't hardened.
