These cups stiffen the rubber flex joint for high power applications so it does not tear out. And it looks like a safety mechanism to prevent the disc from allowing the drive shaft to become decoupled if the disc fails.

Over in BMW / Caddy CTS land, they are using an aluminum disc with individual poly bushings, not sure how well it works.
