There are "superior shift kits" available for some 722.3 transmissions but I get the feeling this is more often than not a diesel engine with automatic transmission thing...

...the Mercedes dealerships still offer very good spares support and there's a classic centre in California.

If you are doing this job yourself you are indeed best off starting with some measurements.

Other simple things such as checking the fluid for cleanliness - the correct fluid level - checking shifter bushings should also be done before you start to remove parts.
