Yeah, I hear a clunk also, could be an injector issue or maybe valves out of adjustment.

Adjusting the valves seems intimidating at first, but once you do it a time or two, not a big deal. There are special wrenches available, or some folks make them. Just bent 14mm open ends. Thin is good too.

Replace the valve cover gasket as well.

That starter will work fine.

I have owned only cars with the new style glow plugs so can't comment on that.
