chain stretch can only show up ATDC, and not before. This is because the chain tensioner and tension rail are only on the passenger side of the engine, and it rotates in the direction towards the driver's side. The chain probably had close to no stretch before being replaced and the indicator bracket was off. It seems to be more common for the indicator bracket to be off than was previously thought (myself included).
