I disagree with other statements, others may be misunderstanding what you are saying.

Your entire 'axle' is not sliding .5 inches. it is just the shaft that is sliding while the housings on the ends where the business happens is staying in place. Is this correct?

This does not suggest you have lost any clips.

More so, it suggests your axles are a bit worn. It will cause a tapping or hammering sound while the wheels are spinning. the rubber boots acting like a spring for each end of each axle.

The axle may work indefinitely, it is not a real cause for concern, but be prepared with reman axles if you plan to conquer it.
