It isn't rust, but metal fatigue. Essentially the engine is too heavy for the load put on the control arm mounts, so they separate from & crack at the tabs where the control arm mounts meet the subframe. Sometimes the holes open themselves. Since you plan on having about double the horsepower and a few extra pounds of engine, I would absolutely add the gussets to your subframe to prevent this.
