I had great success DIYing the brakes on my 95 S320. The two best resources I found for hints etc are the DIY section on this board (E Class brake Pad replacement - even though mine isn't an E class either), and

Between the two, I got enough information for me to be comfortable and successful doing my own brakes - never having done brakes on any vehicle before.
