Follow the wires up from the starter to see if they go to a junction box. If so, the purple wire triggers the solenoid. Jump that wire to the red wire with a short lead and see if the engine turns over. If it sparks, and doesn't work, then it is a bad starter or bad connection. This test rules out everything else as the culprit.
