Sunday afternoon project

The road salt was not kind to my old ball joints this winter. In fact, they are making some of the worst metal on metal squeaking noises I have ever heard. So today I put the 300sd up on blocks and started taking things apart. This is the first time I have done any suspension work on any car, but I have to say, the job was not as hard as I thought it would be. I removed my steering knuckles and am taking them to a machine shop tomorrow to have the new ball joints installed. I have one question to ask some of you vets. When removing the grease cap I found that one of the contact springs was broken. What is the purpose of the contact spring. I'm hoping that I can find one locally to replace this one that was broke. Also how hard is it to install the repair kit for the guide rod on the lower control arm. Thanks
