The Benz LSD is indeed a clutch type, but there are no springs. The initial preload is set with one selectable friction disc per pack. Additional clamping force comes from thrust between the differential pinions and the side gears. When the friction discs wear to a certain point the side gear bottoms against the diff case, and at that point it becomes an open diff on the worn side.
