225 tires will rub in a w124 car. 215s will not. If you want the widest tire for 16" wheels try 215/55/16 unless you roll your fenders, then 225s will work. I know cause thats what I have and I have rubbing problems since I havent had my fenders rolled yet and I might not get it done if I can fit 215/55/16 tires in there without rubbing.
