Thanks for the suggestions, I'll pass them along and look into them. One thing of concern to me is that he tells me that there is sort of a cup-shaped indentation in the center of the original diaphragm that would be tough to reproduce. I haven't actually seen it with my own eyes yet, or figured out how the whole thing works to suss out any suitable substitution.

I'm not even sure if this part is available anymore, he may have to fabricate one. Thanks for the lead on the engineered rubber sheet, I found some promising sounding cloth reinforced neoprene sheeting. One problem for this poor guy is that this car is his daily driver(!) and so tearing into the job means he is stranded until he puts it all back together.
