Jim,

You have the connection procedure correct. But it might work better if you connect the cables and run the engine about 2000 RPM for a while. This will put a charge into the dead car battery and you will have 2 batteries cranking the engine, not one good battery and one dead one taking current from the good battery.

The engine will be cranked much faster by the above method and should start easier.
