I'm guessing something with the head gasket, turbocharger, or valve seals for the smoking problem. And no, a failed gasket does not always result in oil & coolant mixing. You may need to yank the head for inspection. I still think it's likely the engine can be repaired inexpensively (I doubt the bottom end is shot, which is the only thing that would cost a lot to repair).
