Best thing you can do is avoid taking any pain medications. Pain is Nature's way of telling you, "Don't do that you dumb sumbeech".
Ice it when it is sore to reduce the swelling which is causing the pain.
Naproxium sodium (Advil) will help with the swelling but can lengthen the recovery time.
For soft tissue injuries the key is "R.I.C.E."
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
Of course the occasional application of a good single malt can alleviate some of the stress you might be feeling.
