I remember when the only thing crossing the ponds had 4 engines. When the MD-11 hit, it had the range to do SJC-NRT. Now, with the fuel efficiency and reliability, they can take a twin engine across the water with out concern. I think the FAA adjusted the ATOP requirements but that was it.
I do kind of feel bad for Airbus though. They invested a butt ton of cash in the 380 only to see it bit the dust 10 yrs after introduction. I watch it take off to SYD each night at about 1030. It is still a sight to behold.
