Running a car with a partially clogged fuel filter will increase pump load and wear. The fuel filter is acting as a restriction increasing fuel pressure between the pump and filter however pressure from filter to engine is still adequate.

This condition will go unnoticed for some time until the engine computer can no longer compensate and throws a lean code or starts to run bad under high load conditions.
