The Grand Prix was the top of the line radio with (as you mention) search tuning. I don't know if the sound performance equal but I agree that they use the same amplifier. Grand Prix also has chrome tone-arms instead of plastic ones. And there is a tone arm on the right side that is (I'm guessing) for city - suburb - highway (distance). The Grand Prix is and was more costly.
