You really need to get the shop manual for your engine. It'll save you a bunch of time and ensure you do things correctly.
Thanks Mike. I have the less expensive Haynes manual (which is limited in detail but has the important stuff)

This shaft also turns the distributor, the nut to remove the shaft is behind the gear... but the gear has to come off first, and it won't budge. I don't want to force leverage it off and damage it.. it shouldn't be that hard, it's not pressed on (I don't think!)

Here is a picture of the front access port showing the shaft. Not much room to slide the gear forward.

Any other ideas?
