I think people are speaking comparatively as far as W116s versus other models of similar vintage.

The W116s are the R129s of the period. Nice cars, well appointed, there's just no love for them compared to their cousins, like the W123, for example. W114s are much the same.

I suspect it's the styling, as neither model is as distinct as ones before or after them.
