Woodruff Key/Camshaft

When I checked for timing chain stretch I found that the results were showing 6 Degrees Before TDC! Suspect that the chain and rails were replaced without putting in the original woodruff key but the old chain had a woodruff key to compensate for old timing chain stretch is there a way to look at camshaft gear and check this, do the woodruff keys look physically different ( e.g. 2 degree 4 degree etc)?? Is there something else that could cause this condition? Have a slight valve tap on right side but this smoothes out when I advance the the dist. I may have a worn camshaft or rocker causing this but am puzzled with the timing chain results. Thanks for your help... also cannot set the dist to factory with timing light (5 degrees atdc) 1973 Mercedes 450SL
