The vapor lock problems of yore were solved by relocating the fuel pump from the engine bay to the fuel tank.

MB chose to leave the fuel pump outside of the tank, but still close, to minimize vapor lock problems. The accumulator serves to eliminate the other vapor lock possibilities.

Imagine the labor cost for a fuel pump replacement if MB had chosen to place the fuel pump in the tank like other manufacturers do?
