White can be water, but also unburnt fuel. On a cold start or with low compression, it isnt unusual to see white smoke. When I had a glow plug go out on my diesel (a 2.5L mitsu), it blew a cloud of white smoke until the block heated enough. Bad timing would certainly result in that situation...I assume being a newer model, the timing is electronic, or electromechanical (like VVT, etc) -- probably worth replacing thr crank sensor or at least inspecting the wiring leading to it. If it has been sitting, you might find that mice have found a nice meal of the wiring.

For clarification - black smoke is usually excess fuel, but while the engine is up to temp -- just dumping too much in beyond the combustion threshold/air can support. Lots of soot -- white smoke is practically vaporized diesel, totally unburnt.
