The sensors are pretty simple and robust. I would presume they are telling you the pads are worn and respond accordingly. At the worst you go through the trouble to find the problem is with the sensor resolve the issue and have a set of spare pads and sensors for the job later.

I have yet to have a bum indication from the pad wear sensors. I have had them tell me a few hundred miles early in wet weather that the pads needed replacement, as when it was dry after the first time they lit up the dash light, the light stayed off for a few days of daily use.
