AC always on

Just purchased a new '85 300TD which has been a nice improvement over my '80 and I'm trying to work out the little problems.

Here is one problem: The AC is always on if any of the controls on the climate control are swithced on. For example, even if the heat is on "Max" and heat is coming through the vents, the AC is also working. You can small the unmistakable smell of AC in the vents and you can hear the compresor and you can feel the lines pumping coolant.

Even when the climate control is switched to the position when AC is not supposed to come on, it does.

I imagine there is some sort of switch or valve that controls this sort of thing.

Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks
