Thanks everybody.....the switch seems to be broken internally. Just called Aurora Auto parts and got one that will actually fit an 81 300SD for $45. It apparenly came off an 81 with the conversion kit already built in.....the previous owner must have had his switch fail as well. Should have the new/old switch by wednesday evening.
