There is a special tool for removing most MB filters, it will certainly work on yours. P/N 103 589 02 09. Do not use it for tightening the cannister type filter, as sixto says, hand tight is quite enough.

If you have the 24 valve engine you need this to replace the cover after the filter element is changed. There is a description of this in the DIY pages of this website. Observe the tightening torque marked on the cover - 2.5Nm only.
