Inspecting Diesel injectors

Hi,

When I start my '79 240D first thing in the morning, she knocks real hard and smokes heavily. After several minutes of warming up, the smoke goes away, and the engine sounds like a sewing machine. Runs like a champ. My guess is that the springs are bad on some of the injectors, and their dumping too much fuel into the combustion chamber.
I tried cracking the lines to see if the knock would go away, and it did'nt. Any advice on what to look for when I take the injectors out? Should I even worry about it? I figured I might be wasting fuel or causing harm to the piston. Any advice appreciated. Thanks,

Otto
