You could certainly stop the corrosion and prevent future corrosion yourself but, getting it to look original would be very difficult without a lot of specialized equipment and expertise.
If the car is going to be your "beater" as we would say in the south or your "snow car" as I used to say when I lived in Milwaukee, then go for it. But, if this is going to be a car that you will be proud of or want to resell then, I would have it repaired by a professional using Sikkens paints and materials.
Also, if the car is white it will be much easier to fix than if it is black. Black paint shows every little defect. Metallic paint can also be tough to match.
