After reading the article I would agree with most everything he said. Although I am not familiar with all the products he mentioned, that individual matched my "impressions" of the products I was familiair with. (both good and bad) You might want to tell him Vinylex works on tires too...

In any case, this should just strengthen the resolve to never use silicone based products for dash, tires, leather seats (scary what you see people do sometimes), etc. As for why they are so popular? There are many whom think they are saving money be saving $1-2 on a car care product that will end up shortening the life of a part of their car which can cost hundreds or thousands. There are those for whom pricepoint is all and quality is secondary. Plus there are those who just don't know any better and like everything shiny as hell. The old wives tale of polished&shiny = clean/good condition/etc may also have some pull.
