I don’t have time to write a lengthy response right now, but there was a good thread here recently regarding the 123 vs. 124 chassis diesels.
That being said, I just bought a “new” ’95 E300D & love it! The engine characteristics are amazing, it’s similar to a gas engine where the powerband increases as the revs go up, kind of like a gas engine when it comes up on the cam. As compared to my 300D, this engine pulls hard for the (non-marked) redline rather than runs out of breath at higher RPM’s. The chassis is wonderful, as can be expected of any 124. NVH characteristics are a magnitude ahead of the older car, but I’m still keeping my 300D because I love its “character”.
One warning: like any used MBZ, get a Good One!
