My older brother got a 1985 380SL a couple of years ago which had the chrome wheel moulding strips you mentioned.

he took them off and there was not a problem with the paint underneath. a good buffing and waxing brought them up to snuff.

Car looks better without them. Personally I dont think the chrome around the wheel wells looks good, but thats just my taste.

I believe they screw on to the little lip on the underside of the fender, so they shouldnt be too hard to remove. a good cleaning afterwards should do the trick.

i took my 300Ce badge off my car, and cleaned upt he area afterwards. there was some wax residue andsome tape residue, though mine came off easily as the car had been repainted beforeI bought it, and they had replaced the badge with double stick tape, vbut hadn't used a new one. so mine came off very easily and the tape came off even easier.

I used fishing line as suggested by many who have taken off their badges, and I had the thing off in a few minutes.

I had expected to work at it for a few hours at least, but that was based on if it had the factory tape on it.
