No they didn't know that. But they knew that by abandoning Afghanistan to tribal warlords after the fall of communism would only result in a country governed by people who only knew how to govern one way. By force and fiat. It was equivalent to putting a sword in the hand of ten contenders and having them fight it out in a cage. Last man standing becomes king. Utterly irresponsible.
