Rinard, why are you unhappy with the deification of Jesus? You are well versed on the background of the RSV, have you read the history of the King Jame Version? I would suggest one of F. F. Bruce's works. Your description of the state of American Christianity is condemning and unfortunately, accurate. Many churches are more concerned with attaining great numbers and giving a slick presentation to entertain as many as possible every Sunday morning. Finding a pastor that leads a serious study of the Bible can be a challenge. My Bible tells me that God loves us all, that Jesus was sent to die for my mistakes and all that believe will be saved. Doing works pleasing to Him is up to us, can add to our state of living on the other side, but cannot of themselves get us there. The gift of salvation is free, all we need do is accept.
