you wont have to pull the engine to remove the pan, i did this about 2 months back, when i pulled the timing cover. You will have to lift the engine, pretty much as high as it will go in order to position the pan over the frame crossmember. But if you just going to replace the gasket, you may not have to lift so high. The problem also is that the oil pump pickup line hangs way down into the pan, so you will have to clear that too. I actually had to put the car up on jack stands and then lift the engine in order to get the clearance i needed.

I do have a list of parts and things to watch for when you pull the timing cover that I compiled when doing mine. I can post if you are interested.
