I sure would not use any silicone sealant on any cover or part that contains engine oil such as a front cover valve cover ect.There have been a lot of engines ruined by small bits of silicone pluging up oil pasages in main and rod bearings

check an MB shop manual or call dealer,my CD recomends aircraft sealant similar to permatex, non harding permatex put on in a thin coat on both the cover and block and left till tacky before assembling should work with proper toqure specs........
