Push the cupholder down to it's lower position so it latches. On the rear of the cupholder compartment, you'll see an oval or "racetrack" shaped hole. Insert your finger into that and pull that section upwards and the cupholder will unsnap from it's housing. You don't need to disassemble the console just to pull out the cupholder.
The cupholder assembly is available as a replacement part, they are around $40 i think.
