89 420 Sel

I recently purchased an 89 420 SEL with 123K miles on it. All services have been performed and the car ran great. It now emits a whining sound from engine area ( doesn't sound like a vacuum leak) that correlates to engine RPM. The local dealer told me it needed a new tranny ($3,500) and also recommended a new timing chain ($4,000).

I've seen the postings on the timing chain and I hope to find a local non-dealer shop to fix it for much less. Any advice on the transmission noise? The car shifts normal and has no other symptoms. Is this related to the B2 piston problem that has so many postings?
