I installed a second hand pioneer cd head unit (deh-14) in my '87 300E and it works great. Only problem is that I don't have the plastic trim ring that comes with the head unit (the one that fits around the face). The one that was on my old alpine tape deck doesn't fit the pioneer cd head unit. if anyone has a spare pioneer trim ring lying around, I'd pay a reasonable price and shiping. Also, if anyone wants an Alpine tape deck cheap, I put mine on ebay.
