Question 280E manual trans--300D ?

You know what I'm thinking.. And what I'm going to ask..

I've searched and read, I know the 240D trans is the usual canidate for swaping into a 300D when it's done. I know most of the problems and work involved I believe.

Question is this.

Today I found hideing in the weeds at the local salvage yard, a 280E. Euro bumpers, round headlights, manual heat/air, and a STICK. This is the first w123 I've ever sat in, and the clutch and shifter(wood!) felt better than I would have expected, I could see driving the car. I could find no year on the emmesions tag underhood(or the tag at all for that matter), so I'm not sure what year it was, but it did have euro bumpers and a 5cyl gas engine.
Anyway, will that tranny bolt up to our favorite diesel? Is it the same as the 240D's? It was a 4speed near as I could tell, the shifter really felt pretty tight. Most importantly, is it worth haveing the trans and assorted parts for the conversion out of this car as oposed to the 240D? Any chance the driveshaft is the same length?

Dreaming of a real transmission.. Thank you for any input..
