I am in the process of replacing my speakers (see the stereo removal article under the DIY tab above for how to get the speakers and head unit out of the dash). The oneas that sound the best and come closest to fitting are the MB Quart (expensive, weak mids/lows, better with external amp, I am told). http://www.mbquart.com/
The Boston Acoustics 4" speakers (Rx47 or Fx4) sound very good, but modifications to fill the gap between the 4" speaker and the 4 1/2 plus" hole in the dash are needed. http://www.bostonacoustics.com/Series.asp?CategoryID=2
The Diamond Audios make a 4 1/2" speaker (m341i) that sounds good as well and needs less hole filler. http://www.diamondaudio.com/car/prod_frameset.html

Or, Blaupunkt makes an exact size replacement speaker that the folks at Continental Imports can get http://continentalimports.com/bl_speak_spec.html .

If I were going with an external amp and sound processing, I would probably try the MBQuartz or Bostons. Without the external amp, it would be Bostons or Diamond Audio. If I didn't want to mess with filling holes, etc and didn't care THAT much about sound purity - just wanted background music or news- i would probably get the Blaupunkts.

Hope this helps.
