Transmission Whine

I'm looking for some general feedback on Transmission whine. Any insight or thoughts are welcome.

I seem to have noticed a more apparent whine on the forward gears than before. The whine that's similar to the reverse sound. Not as loud or high pitched but definitely apparent to my ears.

An aside: In a previous thread, I've asked about the ATF level. I know the procedure (though the whole temp thing is still perplexing - even had an infrared temp scope to measure the oil temp on the dipstick to correspond with the level - STILL iffy to me if I have the correct level). I'm pretty sure the AT was overfilled by a large margin at one point, but there were never any shift problems.

So if you have any personal experiences, stories, or any technical insight on Transmission whine, I'd appreciate it.

Some topics that comes to mind:

Noise to: transmission wear
ATF level
Normal? (to a degree)
Shift quality vs. noise?
ATF type?
Driveline
Etc.

Anything else that comes to mind.
