My speedometer appears to be electric. No speedo cable (at least to the speedo itself; obviously it's getting its signal from somewhere!).
I think the w126 speedo is electric, dunno how they handle that.

I do know that while my speedo sees to function fine, I can kinda slalom side to side and watch the needle sway a few mph with the inertia. I'm not sure if it effects the cruise signal or not, but it coincided with some of my surging. I like the direct shaft reading because it removes the middleman, which is a path to reliability.
