Some prefilters are clear so you can see what is inside them. Some are not clear. Take off the longer of the 2 hoses connected to the prefilter and let the contents of the filter drain into a glass jar, then come back and describe what was in the filter.
Note: If the tank is really full, you may not want to leave the filter disconnected for any length of time as the fuel level in the tank may be higher than the filter hose.
