This might be a stretch but...
...there was a fuel-filter upgrade for MLs made during 1998-2000. Because of the tight confines of the fuel pump and filter assembly, the retrofit required the removal of the rear seat, carpet, and whatever else that was needed to gain access from the top.
Perhaps this was not done correctly and the cabin area is now breached? Sure is close enough to the exhaust system to pick up fumes...I know you say you smell it from the front driver's side floorboard, but it doesn't hurt to check...
